Mandarin (Peiping dialect) movies had their biggest day ever in Taipei late last year. With international stars Elizabeth Taylor and James Mason among the presenters, Golden Horse awards were made to the leading films and personalities under auspices of the Government Information Office. The government played no role in the judging, which was by those engaged in mass communications, literature and the arts. Top: Chiang Kwug-ch'ao and Sylvia Chang of movies and TV, the MCs. Golden Horse Awards have been presented for many years but the 1979 show was unique in its inclusion of seminars on the techniques and philosophy of movie making. Dr. James Soong, director general of the Government Information Office, expressed hope that Mandarin films can attract a worldwide audience. In terms of the number of features, the Republic of China and Hongkong are already among the world's leading makers of movies. Both Miss Taylor and Mr. Mason expressed gratified surprise with progress of the Chinese industry. Popularity of films at home was exemplified in the audience of 3 million people that watched the Kinma Awards on television.
